Resin Terrazzo
Resin Terrazzo was used to provide a hard wearing easy cleaned surface to corridors and staircases. A black diamond pattern together with the schools logo was incorporated into the floor to provide a functional and tastefully branded finish.
When the entrance to the town hall was refurbished, Resin Terrazzo was installed to all the public areas. Prior to the installation of the Terrazzo, a 90mm polymer screed was laid to provide a suitable flat, level base.
With over 3 million people expected to visit the newly opened Darwin Centre at the Natural History Museum in London, it was crucial that the flooring in the state of the art Cocoon experience was up to scratch and looked impressive.
Architect Ned Philips from At Large, specified Altro Multiscreed and Altro Pastelscreed throughout the Cocoon buildings walkways and exhibition areas. He said The sloping curved walkways featured a number of ramps and bridge links over different levels so we needed a flooring product that offered a seamless surface but was also extremely hardwearing and durable to cope with the constant flow of visitors.
The look and feel of the flooring was also a consideration, the Cocoon has a very distinct ambience and it was important that the flooring felt like an integral part of the building. Weve specified Altro resin flooring on smaller projects before but this was the first time wed used it for such a large scale project and weve been extremely pleased with the result.
Louise King, Darwin Centre Project Manager, said The Darwin Centre is the most significant expansion at the museum since 1881 and the state of the art Cocoon building offers visitors a truly unique experience. It was vital that every aspect of the building combined great design with functionality and thats exactly the combination offered to us by the flooring products used. The finished installation looks great and everyone has been very impressed.
The floor was installed by Chertsey-based Surtech Limited, and the company was rewarded for the high quality of their work with a Prestigious Highly Commended prize in the FeRFA Product of the Year awards 2009. Andy James, Surtech MD, said We were delighted with the end result we achieved on this major project. It is a double honour to have worked on this nationally important building and to have been recognised by our industry for our skills.
